About Karen Schuman
Making art has always been a spellbinding occupation for me. I get caught up in the concepts, philosophies, metaphors, etc., of my work. Art gives covert glimpses into the mind, and so it has become a study of human nature for me, my own and others.
Making a piece of art keeps me grounded, while giving me the time to consider the more spiritual aspects of the work. I begin with a concept in mind and devise the best way to bring it to its ultimate visual culmination. I work with many materials and techniques; from hand-dyed fabrics to handmade paper; I paint, sew, bead, or sculpt, as the piece requires. As I “cultivate” a piece, the concept itself develops even further into more abstract avenues, to ultimately create a story that is personal to me, but still open to free interpretation by others.
Many of the concepts of my artwork are based on spiritual work that I practice or am currently learning. I use a whimsical style to lighten up and add humor to some of the darker aspects of my concepts…..to pay homage to the light side and romance the shadow side.
My artwork, along with the work of others, is on view every third Friday at The Third Friday Gallery, of which I am the director. Please join me and other talented artists for exhibits every month at my venue located in the Oak Park Arts District of Illinois, at 43 Harrison Street, Oak Park, IL.
